A Day in the Queen's Court

October 27th, 1348

Dearest Diary,

The morning began, as usual, with the chiming of the chapel bells. I hurried from my small chamber, pulling on my gown as I went. Today was a day for court, which meant attending to Queen Eleanor. Serving her is both an honor and a trial.

First, I assisted in dressing the Queen. Her gown was a magnificent velvet, embroidered with golden lilies. The jewels! Oh, the jewels! A heavy necklace of sapphires and a crown that sparkled like a thousand stars. My fingers trembled as I fastened the clasp. It is a great responsibility to handle such treasures.

After dressing, we attended mass in the royal chapel. The air was thick with incense, and the choir sang beautifully. I prayed for health and guidance, and for the Queen’s continued good favor. Afterwards, it was time for breakfast: a small meal of bread, cheese, and watered wine.

The court was bustling. Knights in shining armor, merchants with silks and spices, and noble ladies gossiping in hushed tones. I scurried about, delivering messages and attending to the Queen's needs. She received petitions from lords and listened to complaints from commoners. Her wisdom and patience are truly remarkable, though sometimes she sighs, as if the weight of the kingdom rests upon her shoulders.

This afternoon brought excitement: a falconry display! The Queen loves to watch the birds soar and dive. It was a grand spectacle, with the falconers calling out and the falcons swooping through the air. I must admit, even I was captivated.

As evening approached, I helped the Queen prepare for supper. Tonight, there was a feast in the great hall. Tables laden with roasted meats, fruits, and sweet pastries. Music filled the air, and dancers twirled in their finery. I watched from the sidelines, grateful for a moment's rest. Even the Queen seemed to enjoy herself, laughing with her courtiers.

Now, as the candles burn low, I sit here in my chamber, reflecting on the day. Serving in the Queen's court is a world of splendor and intrigue. It is a life unlike any other. Though tiring, I wouldn't trade it for all the gold in the kingdom.

Goodnight, diary. Until tomorrow.

Eleanor
