The back of the car was full of plastic bins and taped cardboard boxes. Leo's favorite green sleeping bag was stuffed on top. These were the only things they had left from their home in Shoreline. Two weeks ago, a huge storm had hit their town. A giant wave of water flooded their whole neighborhood. After the water went away, Leo's parents decided they had to move. They needed a safer place to live, far away from the ocean.

Their new home was in Mountainview. This city was high up in the rocky hills, hours away from the sea. As the car climbed the steep, twisting roads, Leo pressed his face against the cool window. He missed the smell of the salty beach. Here, the air was cold and smelled like pine trees. Everything felt strange. Instead of sandy beaches, there were big gray cliffs. Instead of the sound of waves, the wind just whispered through the tall trees.

When they got to their new apartment, Leo felt a heavy sadness. The rooms were empty and smelled of wet paint. His mother put her hand on his shoulder. "I know this is hard, Leo," she said quietly. "But we are safe, and we are together. That is what matters. We can start over anywhere."

The next morning, Leo walked to the neighborhood park. In the middle of the park, he saw a busy garden. An older man was watering bright yellow sunflowers. They looked just like the flowers from Leo's old home. The man saw Leo and smiled. He gave Leo a small paper packet of sunflower seeds.

Leo held the seeds in his hand. He looked at the big mountain city under the sun. It was not Shoreline. But as he watched some kids playing a game of tag, he smiled. He knew that new beginnings could grow here too.
