A cactus is a very special plant. It can live in dry places like the desert. It has thick skin and sharp spines. The spines keep the plant safe.

First, you need a sunny spot. Cacti love to be in the bright sun. Put your plant on a window sill. The sun will help your cactus grow big.

Next, you must learn about watering. Cacti do not need water every day. They store water inside their thick bodies. Wait until the soil is dry and hard.

When the soil is dry, add some water. Do not use too much water at once. Make sure your pot has a hole at the bottom. The hole lets the extra water drain away.

You should use a special kind of dirt. Sandy soil is the best for a cactus. It lets the roots breathe and stay dry. Sand keeps the plant from getting too wet.

Be very careful with your hands. The spines on the cactus can be very pointy. They can poke your fingers if you touch them. It is a good idea to wear gloves.

Check on your cactus once every week. Look at the color of the plant. A healthy cactus is usually a bright green. If it looks yellow, it might need more sun.

You can even name your cactus friend. Some people give them names like Spike or Greenie. Taking care of a plant is a big job. You are doing a great job being a plant helper.

Watching a cactus grow is a lot of fun. They can live for many, many years. Give it sun and a little bit of water. Now you are ready to care for your cactus!
