Finding the right book in a busy library can feel overwhelming. With thousands of colorful covers and exciting titles, how do you know if a book is a good match for your reading level? If a book is too simple, you might get bored quickly. If it contains too many unfamiliar words, you might feel frustrated and lose track of the story. Fortunately, you can use a quick strategy called the Five-Finger Rule to discover whether a book is just right for you.

Follow these simple steps before checking out your next book:

Step 1: Pick a Full Page

Select a book that catches your eye. Open it to a page somewhere in the middle. Make sure the page has a solid paragraph or two of regular text, rather than just illustrations, chapter titles, or dialogue bubbles.

Step 2: Read and Count

Begin reading the page silently or in a quiet whisper. Whenever you encounter a word you do not know, cannot pronounce, or cannot figure out using context clues, put up one finger.

Step 3: Finish the Page

Keep reading at your normal pace until you reach the bottom of the page. Do not rush, and remember to keep track of how many fingers you are holding up.

Step 4: Check Your Score

Look down at your hand and count your raised fingers:

  • 0 to 1 Finger: This book is an easy read for you. It is a fantastic choice if you want a relaxing, breezy story before bedtime.
  • 2 to 3 Fingers: This is a "just-right" book! It provides a comfortable challenge with enough new vocabulary to build your skills without slowing down your enjoyment.
  • 4 Fingers: This book might be tough to tackle alone. It could be fun to read aloud with a teacher, parent, or partner who can assist with tricky phrases.
  • 5 or More Fingers: This book is likely too difficult for independent reading right now. Set it aside on a wishlist and try reading it again in a few months!

Remember, this method is not a graded assessment. It is simply a handy tool to help you select books that make reading enjoyable, satisfying, and fun.
