James Earl Carter Jr., known to the world as Jimmy Carter, dedicated his life to public service and defending human rights. He was born in 1924 and grew up on a peanut farm in Plains, Georgia. During the Great Depression, life on the farm was hard work. His family lived without modern comforts like electricity or indoor plumbing. Jimmy learned strong business skills from his father and kindness from his mother. Growing up in the American South, he saw the unfairness of segregation, which kept Black and white people separated. These early experiences inspired him to treat all people fairly.

After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1946, Carter served as an officer on nuclear submarines. In 1953, when his father passed away, Carter left the Navy to manage his family's peanut business. Later, he entered politics to help his community. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1970 and spoke out boldly against racial injustice.

In 1976, Carter ran for president of the United States. He promised citizens that he would always be honest with them. As the 39th president, he created the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. His greatest diplomatic accomplishment was guiding the Camp David Accords, a historical peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. However, his presidency also faced tough problems, including rising inflation and an economic slowdown, along with international challenges like the Iran hostage crisis.

After leaving office in 1981, Carter began a second career helping people around the globe. In 1982, he founded the Carter Center to promote democracy, resolve conflicts, and cure diseases. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, picking up tools to build homes for families in need. In 2002, Jimmy Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifelong dedication to peace and fairness.
