Long ago, a baby girl was named Claudia Alta Taylor. Her nurse said she was as pretty as a ladybird. That is how she got the nickname Lady Bird. She grew up in Texas. She loved paddling canoes and walking in fields of bright wildflowers. Nature brought her joy and peace.

Lady Bird worked hard in school. Later, she met a man named Lyndon B. Johnson. They got married. Lyndon worked in the government, and Lady Bird helped him every day. In 1963, Lyndon became the President of the United States. Lady Bird became the First Lady.

Lady Bird wanted to make the country a cleaner and prettier place. She believed green spaces made people feel happy and healthy. She started a project in Washington, D.C. She helped plant thousands of flowers and trees in parks and schoolyards.

Next, Lady Bird wanted to help the whole nation. She asked lawmakers to pass a special rule called the Highway Beautification Act. People called it Lady Bird's Bill. This law cleaned up messy trash along big roads. It replaced ugly signs with native grasses and bright wildflowers.

After leaving the White House, Lady Bird kept helping nature. She started the National Wildflower Research Center in Texas. Today, people still see blooming flowers along roads. Lady Bird Johnson showed everyone how important it is to protect our beautiful earth.
