Should Washington Ban Plastic Bags?

Imagine you are walking along a beautiful beach near Puget Sound. You see birds flying, seals swimming, and…plastic bags floating in the water? Plastic bags are a big problem for our environment, especially places like Puget Sound. Many people think that Washington State should ban single-use plastic bags. But is that the right thing to do?

What's the Problem?

Single-use plastic bags are the kind you get at the grocery store. They seem handy, but they can cause a lot of trouble. First, they often end up as litter. The wind blows them into our streets, parks, and waterways. This litter is ugly and pollutes our environment.

Second, plastic bags can hurt animals. Sea turtles, for example, might think a plastic bag is a jellyfish and eat it. This can make them very sick or even cause them to die. Other animals can get tangled in plastic bags, making it hard for them to move or find food.

Why Ban Them?

Banning plastic bags could really help. If stores didn't give out plastic bags, there would be fewer of them around to pollute our environment. People would have to bring their own reusable bags. This would mean less litter and fewer animals getting hurt. Some cities in Washington have already banned plastic bags, and it has made a positive difference.

Are There Other Options?

Some people say that instead of banning plastic bags, we should recycle them. Recycling is good, but not all plastic bags get recycled. Also, the process of recycling plastic can use a lot of energy and water. Other people suggest that stores could charge a small fee for plastic bags. This might make people think twice before taking one.

What Do You Think?

Banning single-use plastic bags could help protect Puget Sound and our local environment. While there are other options, a ban might be the most effective way to reduce pollution and protect wildlife. It's important to think about how our choices affect the world around us. What do you think Washington should do?
