In the Bavarian town of Herzogenaurach, Germany, two brothers transformed a modest family workshop into a bitter corporate war that fundamentally revolutionized the athletic apparel industry. Adolf and Rudolf Dassler began manufacturing specialized sports shoes during the 1920s within the cramped laundry room of their family home. Adolf, known as "Adi," was a meticulous craftsman and inventor who concentrated on technical nuances such as traction, weight distribution, and shoe construction. Conversely, his elder brother Rudolf, or "Rudi," was an extroverted, persuasive salesman whose charisma expanded their commercial reach across Europe. By unifying their complementary skills, they founded the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory, rapidly gaining acclaim for superior athletic footwear.

The enterprise achieved global recognition during the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In a bold promotional gamble, Adi traveled to the Olympic Village with a suitcase of handmade spiked shoes, convincing legendary American sprinter Jesse Owens to compete in them. Owens earned four gold medals, providing the brand with an invaluable international endorsement. Global orders accelerated exponentially, seemingly securing the brothers' industrial prominence.

However, personal antagonism and simmering resentment gradually eroded their collaborative partnership. As the enterprise expanded, their contrasting temperaments provoked intense friction. Adi regarded Rudi as reckless and overbearing, while Rudi felt marginalized by Adi's creative dominance. The geopolitical turmoil and domestic stress of World War II catalyzed their final breakdown. Accusations of disloyalty, political suspicions, and disputes between their spouses destroyed any remaining goodwill. Following the war, mutual distrust made reconciliation unattainable.

In 1948, the brothers formally dismantled their joint venture. They divided the machinery, patents, and labor force evenly, forcing employees to choose allegiances. Adi established "Adidas" by blending his nickname and surname, while Rudi launched "Puma" after briefly considering "Ruda." They erected competing factories on opposite banks of the Aurach River, physically cementing their estrangement.

This division fractured Herzogenaurach into a polarized community known as "the town of bent necks," where residents surveyed newcomers' footwear before initiating conversation. Local businesses exclusively accommodated workers from one faction, and social integration between rival families was strictly discouraged. While this hostility persisted until their deaths, the relentless competition inadvertently accelerated modern sports marketing and athletic shoe innovation.
