The Cat, the Dog, and the Mouse

Characters:

  • Chester: A lazy, fat cat
  • Buddy: An energetic dog
  • Squeaky: A clever mouse

(Scene: A sunny living room. Chester the cat is asleep on a comfy chair. Buddy the dog paces back and forth, while Squeaky the mouse peeks out from behind the sofa.)

Buddy: (Whispering) I can't stand it anymore! Look at Chester, just sleeping away the whole day. We need some excitement around here!

Squeaky: (Squeaking quietly) I agree! It's so boring. But what can we do? He never moves unless it's to eat.

Buddy: I have an idea! What if we scare him? Make him think something dangerous is happening?

Squeaky: (Eyes widening) Like what? A monster? A giant vacuum cleaner?

Buddy: Better than that! We use you as bait!

Squeaky: (Jumping back) Bait?! You want to use me?

Buddy: Hear me out! You run past him, and I'll bark really loudly. He hates loud noises. It will scare him enough to make him jump and run.

Squeaky: Hmmm… it's risky. But if it gets Chester moving, I’m in. But be careful!

Buddy: (Nods enthusiastically) Okay, here we go! (Buddy gets into a crouch, ready to pounce)

Squeaky: (Takes a deep breath) Wish me luck!

(Squeaky darts out from behind the sofa and scurries past Chester’s chair. Buddy lets out a loud BARK!)

Buddy: WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

(Chester leaps into the air, his fur standing on end. He dashes across the room, knocking over a lamp.)

Chester: (Yowling) What was that?! What’s happening?!

(Chester scrambles up the curtains, clinging to them for dear life.)

Squeaky: (Giggles) It worked! He’s actually moving!

Buddy: (Wagging his tail) I told you it would! Now, how do we get him down from there?

Chester: (From atop the curtains) Get what away from me? Is it gone?

Squeaky: (Looking up at Chester) There's nothing there, Chester. It was just Buddy and me playing a game.

Chester: (Eyes narrowed) A game? You woke me up for a game? (Chester slowly climbs down the curtains, a grumpy look on his face.)

Buddy: (Nervously) Sorry, Chester. We were just bored.

Chester: (Stretching) Well, now that I'm up, maybe I'll go find a snack. And then… (Yawns) …another nap.

(Chester walks towards the kitchen. Buddy and Squeaky exchange glances.)

Squeaky: Well, that was… something.

Buddy: Yeah. Maybe next time, we'll just play fetch.
