The Girl of Ha Long Bay

Mai lived in a floating village nestled in the heart of Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. Instead of streets, her home was surrounded by shimmering turquoise water. Houses bobbed gently, tethered to the seabed, creating a unique community where boats were as common as cars in a city.

Life on the Water

Mai’s days began with the soft lapping of water against her family's wooden house. Her father, a fisherman, would leave before sunrise, his small boat disappearing into the mist that often shrouded the limestone karsts jutting out of the bay. Her mother tended to their floating garden, a small patch of green where they grew vegetables and herbs.

Mai attended the floating school, a larger platform that served as a classroom for all the children in the village. The teacher, Mr. Hai, was old and wise, his face etched with the stories of the sea. He taught them math, history, and the importance of respecting the ocean that provided for them.

The Legend of the Dragon

One evening, while helping her mother prepare dinner, Mai gazed at the towering limestone formations. Mr. Hai had told them the legend of Ha Long Bay: a dragon descended from the heavens to help the Vietnamese fight invaders, spitting out jewels that turned into the islands and karsts protecting the land. Mai always felt a sense of wonder when she looked at the landscape, imagining the ancient dragon slumbering beneath the waves.

A Stormy Challenge

One day, a fierce storm brewed. The wind howled, and the waves crashed against the houses. Mai's family secured their home as best they could, but the storm's fury was relentless. The floating garden was swept away, and some houses broke free from their moorings. Fear gripped the village.

Amidst the chaos, Mai noticed a small fishing boat struggling against the waves. It was old Mr. Ba, whose boat engine had failed. Without hesitation, Mai urged her father to help. Together, they braved the storm and towed Mr. Ba's boat back to safety.

A Hero of the Bay

When the storm subsided, the village emerged battered but not broken. Mai was hailed as a hero. Her bravery and quick thinking had saved Mr. Ba's life. But for Mai, it was simply what anyone in her close-knit community would have done. As the sun set, casting a golden glow on the bay, Mai realized the true strength of her floating village lay not in its sturdy houses, but in the bonds of its people, forever connected by the sea and the legend of the dragon.
