The Grumpy Morning
Lily woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Her hair was a mess, her toast was burnt, and her little brother, Tom, was singing his favorite (and most annoying) song at the top of his lungs. Lily felt a frown creeping onto her face, a frown so big it could scare away birds.
She stomped downstairs, grumbling, “Good morning,” which sounded more like “Gloom-morning!” Her mom, who was usually cheerful, sighed and said, “Well, someone’s not a morning person.” Lily’s grumpiness seemed to float through the air like a cloud of smoke, making her mom’s smile disappear.
At school, Lily bumped into her friend, Ben, in the hallway. “Watch it!” she snapped, even though it was her fault. Ben, who was usually full of jokes, just shrugged and walked away, his shoulders slumped. Lily's grumpy mood was spreading, infecting everyone she met like a silly sickness.
Even Mrs. Davis, her always-smiling teacher, seemed a little less bright. When Lily asked a question, Mrs. Davis answered with a sigh, her usual sparkle gone. Lily realized with a jolt that she was the reason for everyone's bad mood. Her grumpiness was contagious!
Just then, Maya, a girl with a laugh that could light up a room, skipped over. “Hey, Lily! Look what I found!” She held up a shiny, colorful rock. Lily couldn’t help but smile. Maya’s cheerfulness was like a bright sunbeam, melting away the grumpiness. She forgot all about her bad morning as Maya started telling a story about finding the rock on the way to school.
As Lily smiled and listened, she noticed Mrs. Davis laughing with another student, and Ben telling a joke to a group of friends. The cloud of grumpiness had lifted. Lily realized that just as bad moods can spread, so can happiness. And she was determined to spread joy from now on!
