The Grumpy Therapist
Characters:
- Narrator
- Mittens (a grumpy cat)
- Barkley (a nervous dog)
- Hazel (a stressed hamster)
- Shelby (a lonely parrot)
Narrator: In the bustling city of Meadow Creek lived Mittens, a cat of unparalleled grumpiness. His days were filled with sneers, complaints about the quality of his tuna, and disdain for just about everything. But fate, as it often does, had a peculiar twist in store for Mittens.
Mittens: (Grumbling) Another day, another reason to be annoyed. Honestly, can't a cat get some peace around here?
Narrator: One afternoon, a distraught dog named Barkley wandered into Mittens's garden. Barkley was known for his crippling anxiety.
Barkley: (Whimpering) Oh dear, oh dear. I can't seem to fetch the ball without… without the earth swallowing me whole!
Mittens: (Scoffs) A dog with feelings? Preposterous! But, fine. What's got your tail in a twist?
Barkley: It’s… it’s everything! The squirrels, the mailman, the very idea of walks! I’m just… so… nervous!
Mittens: (Sighs dramatically) Look, mutt, life’s terrible. Accept it. Now go bury a bone or something.
Narrator: Surprisingly, Mittens's cynical honesty was exactly what Barkley needed to hear. He trotted off, a little less anxious and a lot more determined to face his fears.
Narrator: Word spread quickly. Soon, other animals sought Mittens's unique brand of therapy. First came Hazel, a hamster on the verge of a breakdown.
Hazel: (Panicked) I’ve been running on my wheel for hours, and I’m still not getting anywhere! My career is going nowhere!
Mittens: (Dryly) Welcome to the club, fuzzball. At least you have a wheel. I have a human who thinks belly rubs are a substitute for respect.
Hazel: (Slightly calmer) I… I never thought of it that way. Maybe I need a new perspective.
Narrator: Then there was Shelby, a parrot with severe loneliness.
Shelby: (Sadly) Polly wants a… friend. But no one ever wants to listen to Polly.
Mittens: So? Humans squawk all day and nobody listens to them either. Find a mirror and talk to yourself.
Shelby: (Considering) That… that’s actually not a bad idea! I am quite fascinating.
Narrator: Mittens continued dispensing his grumpy wisdom, and, against all odds, the animals of Meadow Creek began to thrive. Barkley started a dog-walking business for nervous canines. Hazel became a motivational speaker for rodents. Shelby started a popular podcast.
Mittens: (To himself) I still maintain that the world is awful, but at least these fools are less annoying now.
Narrator: And so, Mittens, the world’s grumpiest cat, became the world’s most unlikely pet therapist. Proving that sometimes, all it takes is a little cynicism to see the bright side… or at least tolerate the darkness a little better.
