Albert Einstein and the Great Telescope

In May 1921, Albert Einstein went on his very first trip across the United States. By that time, the famous scientist was already known around the world. Just two years earlier, in 1919, scientists had tested his Theory of General Relativity during a solar eclipse. They proved that massive objects like the Sun actually bend light traveling through space. During his tour, Einstein visited a quiet Midwest town called Williams Bay, Wisconsin. This small community was home to the Yerkes Observatory, a famous research center for studying the stars.
Built in 1897, the observatory was run by the University of Chicago. Its most special feature was a huge 40-inch refracting telescope. It was located inside a gigantic iron dome. A refracting telescope uses giant glass lenses to collect and focus light from space. Even today, it is still the largest refractor telescope ever built for scientific research. Scientists at the observatory used this powerful instrument to make detailed maps of star systems and measure distances in space.
