Confident but Not Always Correct: Understanding How AI Answers Questions

Imagine asking a computer a tricky question about history or science. Within seconds, it replies with complete, polished sentences. It uses sophisticated words and sounds just like an expert teacher or a walking encyclopedia. Because the response is smooth and sounds certain, it is easy to assume that every single word is true. However, an answer generated by artificial intelligence, or AI, can sound completely confident while still being mistaken or incomplete.
To understand why this happens, it helps to know how generative AI actually works. Generative AI tools do not think, reason, or understand facts the way human beings do. Instead, they are powerful computer programs trained on enormous collections of text, including books, articles, and websites. When you ask an AI a question, it does not look out into the world, visit a library, or double-check a list of verified facts. Instead, it predicts which words are most likely to come next based on the patterns it learned from all that data.
