Maps often show countries divided by neat, colorful borders. However, nature does not follow lines drawn on paper. Between the United States and Mexico lies a vast geographic region defined by shared waterways, towering mountain ranges, and rich desert ecosystems. For centuries, the natural environment has connected the land and the people living on both sides.

One of the clearest examples of this connection is the great river that flows between Texas and four Mexican states. In the United States, this river is known as the Rio Grande, which means "Big River" in Spanish. In Mexico, people call it the Río Bravo, or Río Bravo del Norte, which means the "Fierce River." Despite having two different names, it is a single body of water. The river begins in the snowy mountains of Colorado, travels southward through New Mexico, and winds toward the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way, its water sustains farms, wildlife, and millions of residents in both nations.
