Locked Out in the Desert Heat

The August sun was already radiating off the asphalt by seven forty-five, baking the courtyard of Saguaro Vista Middle School into a shimmering griddle. Mateo shifted his backpack from one shoulder to the other, feeling the damp fabric of his new shirt clinging to his back. Around him, hundreds of seventh graders mingled nervously, trading stories about their summer breaks while eyeing the towering glass entrance of the main building. Everyone was eager for the heavy doors to swing open so they could escape into the climate-controlled sanctuary of the hallways.
At exactly eight o'clock, the electronic morning tone sounded, but instead of the usual crisp chime, it produced a strained, grinding buzz that died abruptly mid-note. Simultaneously, the digital display board mounted beside the entryway blinked out, and the low, ever-present hum of the campus air conditioning units sputtered into complete silence.
Mateo stepped toward the double doors alongside a cluster of classmates. Mr. Henderson, the vice principal, gripped the silver pull handles and tugged. The heavy glass panels rattled against their frames, but the magnetic seals remained rigidly clamped shut. He swiped his staff keycard across the digital scanner repeatedly, but the indicator light remained dead gray.
