Planting Seeds of Change: The Story of Lady Bird Johnson

When Claudia Alta Taylor was just a baby in Karnack, Texas, her nursemaid remarked that she was "as purty as a ladybird." The affectionate nickname stuck for the rest of her life. Growing up in the piney woods and bayous of East Texas, young Lady Bird developed a deep affection for the natural world. She spent hours paddling canoes through quiet waters covered with Spanish moss and exploring fields filled with bright wildflowers. Nature was not just pretty scenery to her; it provided comfort, wonder, and inspiration.
Lady Bird was a bright and determined student. She graduated from high school at just fifteen and went on to earn two degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1934, she met an ambitious young politician named Lyndon B. Johnson. The couple married shortly after, beginning a lifelong partnership. When Lyndon was elected to the United States Congress, Lady Bird managed his office, supported his campaigns, and even ran his congressional duties while he served in the military during World War II.
