Save the Sidewalks: Why Trunk-or-Treat Shouldn't Replace Tradition

Every October, neighborhoods across the country transform. Cardboard tombstones sprout on front lawns, tangled faux cobwebs cling to porch railings, and the warm, flickering grin of a carved jack-o'-lantern greets passersby from the steps. For generations, the centerpiece of this autumn ritual has been door-to-door trick-or-treating, a night when children step into the crisp evening air to navigate their local streets in search of candy. In recent years, however, a modern alternative has steadily gained ground: the organized "trunk-or-treat." Held in church, school, or community center parking lots, these events feature rows of parked cars with decorated open trunks, allowing costumed children to loop through in mere minutes. While well-intentioned, this rapid convenience-driven substitute should never entirely replace traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating.
