Savitribai Phule: The Mother of Modern Indian Education

In the mid-19th century, the landscape of Indian society was heavily defined by rigid caste hierarchies and severe gender restrictions. Education was a privilege reserved almost exclusively for upper-caste men, while women and those from marginalized communities were systematically denied the right to learn. Into this world, Savitribai Phule was born on January 3, 1831, in the village of Naigaon in Maharashtra. Though she began her life in a society that sought to limit her potential, she would eventually grow to become a revolutionary force for equality, a pioneer of women’s rights, and the woman recognized today as the mother of modern Indian education.

At the age of nine, Savitribai was married to Jyotirao Phule, who was thirteen at the time. Jyotirao was a visionary thinker who believed that education was the most powerful tool for social change. Recognizing Savitribai’s keen intellect and curiosity, he began teaching her to read and write at home. This was a radical act during a time when teaching a woman was considered a violation of religious and social norms. Savitribai embraced her studies with passion, eventually undergoing formal teacher training. Together, the couple formed a formidable partnership, dedicating their lives to dismantling the barriers of the caste system and advocating for the emancipation of women through literacy.
