The Big Debate: Should Summer Vacation Disappear?

For more than a century, American schools have followed a familiar tradition: the long summer vacation. When the final bell rings in June, students cheer for three months of freedom filled with swimming, family trips, and lazy afternoons. However, many teachers and leaders are asking if this old schedule still makes sense. Across the country, an intense debate is growing between keeping the traditional calendar and switching to year-round schooling.
Supporters of year-round schooling, often called a balanced calendar, argue that long summers cause students to forget what they learned. This problem is known as the summer slide. During the three months away from school, many kids lose valuable reading and math skills. While some families can afford science camps or private tutoring, other students do not have those opportunities. Over several years, this gap grows wider. In a balanced calendar, students still attend classes for 180 days, but the time is spread out evenly. For example, in a common 45-15 schedule, children go to school for nine weeks and then get three weeks off. This keeps learning fresh and cuts down on the weeks teachers usually spend reviewing old lessons every autumn.
