The Master of Imagination: Roald Dahl

Have you ever dreamed of finding a golden ticket inside a candy wrapper, or floating across the ocean inside an enormous fruit? For millions of children around the world, these magical ideas feel completely real. They were created by Roald Dahl, one of the most beloved storytellers in history. Dahl wrote tales filled with humor, mischief, and wonder, but his own life was just as full of adventure as the books he created.
Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916 to Norwegian parents. As a young boy, he loved listening to his mother tell old folk tales about trolls, giants, and magical creatures. When he went away to boarding school, an exciting event happened that sparked his imagination. A famous chocolate company occasionally sent boxes of new candy bars to the students, asking them to test the flavors and write down their opinions. Young Roald took this job very seriously. He spent hours dreaming about inventing delicious new sweets that nobody had ever tasted before. Many years later, these sweet memories inspired him to write some of his most famous stories.
