The Great Cardboard Odyssey
Leo sat on the back porch, staring at the thermometer. It was ninety degrees, and the air felt like a warm, damp blanket. Beside him, Maya was busy braiding blades of grass. "We are wasting the best Saturday of the month," she sighed. "We need a mission."
Leo liked missions, but he preferred them to have a clear set of instructions. Maya, on the other hand, thought instructions were just suggestions. They had been best friends since kindergarten, a partnership built on the balance between Leo’s logic and Maya’s imagination.
"What if we build the Ultimate Galactic Explorer?" Maya proposed, her eyes lighting up. She pointed toward the garage, where a stack of refrigerator-sized boxes sat waiting for recycling day. Leo’s mind immediately went to work. "We would need a stable base, a cockpit for navigation, and maybe a periscope made of PVC pipe."
Within minutes, they were dragging the massive boxes into the shade of the old oak tree. Leo grabbed a roll of silver duct tape and a measuring tape. Maya emerged from the house with a basket of acrylic paints and a handful of glitter.
