At the center of this scientific inquiry is Toxoplasma gondii, a microscopic protozoan parasite. While this organism can infect nearly any warm-blooded animal, it can only reproduce sexually inside the digestive tract of felids, including domestic cats. The parasite produces microscopic cysts that a cat sheds in its litter. In nature, when a rodent accidentally ingests these cysts, the parasite migrates to the rodent's brain.
