The Conservatory Sanctuary

Silence had become the most valuable currency in the valley. Six months had passed since the strange contagion swept through the metropolitan center, transforming busy commuters into hollow, wandering figures driven by an endless restlessness. Maya adjusted the straps of her canvas rucksack, pausing behind the rusted chassis of an abandoned delivery van. Beside her, her twelve-year-old brother, Jonah, mirrored her posture, keeping low to the gravel and clutching a sturdy wooden staff.
Their destination rose above the overgrown brambles ahead: the Oakwood Botanical Conservatory. Before the collapse, the massive glass dome had housed thousands of rare plant specimens from across the globe. Today, it represented something far more practical—sustenance. The rooftop garden at Maya and Jonah's apartment complex had depleted its soil nutrients, and their remaining stores of dried legumes were dwindling. If their small enclave hoped to survive the approaching winter, they needed viable heirloom seeds, particularly cold-tolerant root vegetables and legumes, which rumors suggested were preserved in the conservatory’s lower research vault.
"Perimeter looks clear," Jonah whispered, his voice barely carrying past the hood of his rain jacket. "The chain-link fence on the eastern wing still holds, but the south gate has given way."
