The Message at Midnight

At exactly 11:59 PM, the screen of Noah’s smartphone flared in the dark. The notification banner sent an icy jolt through his chest. The incoming text was from Noah Davis—his own name and phone number.
The message contained a single ominous warning: Whatever you do, do not open the front door.
Noah stared at the glowing letters, his thumb trembling above the glass. Before his bewildered mind could rationalize how someone had cloned his number, three muffled thumps echoed from the first floor. Someone was knocking on the heavy oak door downstairs.
His parents were sound asleep down the hall, completely unaware. Noah knew he should have been terrified, but curiosity and adrenaline compelled him forward. He eased out of bed, his wool socks muffling every step along the cold hardwood corridor. He paused at the top of the staircase, listening intently.
A faint chime sounded from his palm. Noah glanced down and spotted the first peculiar clue: a tiny cloud synchronization icon was spinning in the upper corner of his screen, indicating that his old, retired tablet—the one usually stored in the garage—was currently active and transmitting data.
