About 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, a massive Triceratops stepped through a humid prehistoric forest. With a body as heavy as an elephant, the four-legged creature moved steadily across muddy ground covered in sprawling ferns and cycads. The giant used its beak to gather low-growing vegetation for its meals.

The name Triceratops means "three-horned face," and its skull was one of the most striking features of any dinosaur. Above each eye rested a long, pointed horn that could reach three feet in length, while a shorter horn sat on its snout. Behind its face stretched a wide, solid shield of bone called a neck frill. Scientists study whether this impressive structure helped protect the animal's neck from predators. The horns and frill might have also helped Triceratops display strength to rivals or communicate with others of its kind.

As a dedicated plant eater, this dinosaur spent much of its day browsing. It used a strong, curved beak similar to a parrot's to snip tough woody stems and fern leaves close to the ground. Inside its jaws, hundreds of tightly packed teeth formed shearing batteries that sliced through fibrous greenery. Whenever teeth wore down or fell out from grinding rough plants, new ones grew in to take their place.
