April gives readers plenty to observe and put into words. A spring science text can lead to a labeled sketch. A poem can give readers a reason to pay close attention to word choice. Start with a task that lets them show what they understood through a drawing, a sentence, or a short conversation.
Open the Earth Day readings on April 22. Ask students to identify a problem described in one text and underline a detail that helps explain it. Then invite them to write a question they would need to answer before proposing a solution.
For International Haiku Poetry Day, read aloud and ask which words help readers picture a scene. Use April 23 to talk about what makes a book memorable. Give each reader a minute to recommend a text and explain the recommendation with a detail.
Compare the rainbow readings on April 3 with another science passage later in the month. Keep the same question for both texts: which sentence explains what happens, and which one explains why? The comparison helps readers distinguish an observation from an explanation.
A short April reading can lead to a quick writing task. Ask students to describe something they can observe outside, then reread a passage and borrow a precise word or useful way to organize their explanation. Use the new writing to talk about how readers turn what they notice into something another person can understand.
