Faraday's induction-ring experiment (1831)

On August 29, 1831, Michael Faraday observed a brief current while experimenting with coils around an iron ring. The observation helped reveal electromagnetic induction.

Teaching use: Ask learners to explain what changed in the setup and how the resulting observation supports an idea about magnetic fields and current.

Temple Grandin's birthday (1947)

Temple Grandin was born on August 29, 1947. Her life and work offer a biography of an autistic scientist and animal-behavior specialist; do not reduce her contributions to a single personal trait.

Teaching use: Invite learners to identify how observation and design appear in her work and to use respectful, specific language when discussing disability.

International Day Against Nuclear Tests / testing ban advocacy

The United Nations marks the International Day Against Nuclear Tests on August 29. Andrei Sakharov’s public passage supports a related discussion of nuclear testing, disarmament, and scientists’ civic responsibilities; it does not make him the sole founder of the observance.

Teaching use: Ask learners to distinguish scientific knowledge from decisions about how it is used, and to support their answer with evidence from the reading.
