Long before he became a figure in modern popular culture, Thor was one of the most revered deities in Norse mythology. To the ancient people of Scandinavia, he was the red-bearded god of thunder, lightning, storms, and physical strength. As the son of Odin, the chief god, and Fjörgyn, the personification of the Earth, Thor held a central position in the Norse pantheon. While Odin was often associated with wisdom, magic, and royalty, Thor was considered the defender of common people, particularly farmers and laborers who depended on rain for their crops and physical resilience for survival.

Thor’s extraordinary power was enhanced by several legendary artifacts. Most famous among these was Mjölnir, a mighty hammer forged by skilled dwarves. Mjölnir was capable of crushing mountains and always returned to Thor’s hand when thrown. To wield this formidable weapon, Thor wore iron gauntlets called Járngreipr and a magical belt named Megingjörð, which doubled his already immense strength. Thor traveled across the realms in a chariot pulled by two giant goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. Ancient legends claimed that the rumbling of his chariot wheels across the clouds caused thunder, while the strike of his hammer created lightning.

In Norse lore, Thor served as the principal protector of both Asgard, the realm of the gods, and Midgard, the realm of humanity. He spent much of his time defending these realms against giant creatures who symbolized the chaotic and destructive forces of nature. Through these myths, ancient Scandinavian societies explained harsh natural phenomena and derived reassurance from the belief that a mighty champion protected them from chaos. Thor's legacy persists today, most visibly in the English language, where the word "Thursday" originates from "Thor's Day."
