Riding the Crest at Sandy Cove
Leo stood on the sun-drenched shore of Sandy Cove, his toes sinking into the warm, damp sand. In his hands, he gripped his bright blue surfboard, which felt surprisingly heavy. The ocean stretched out before him, a vast expanse of shimmering turquoise and deep sapphire. For weeks, Leo had practiced popping up on his board in his living room, but looking at the actual waves made his stomach do little somersaults.
"Ready, Leo?" his older sister, Maya, asked as she adjusted her leash. She was an experienced surfer and had promised to help him catch his first real wave today. Leo nodded, though his heart was thumping like a drum. He waded into the cool water, feeling the refreshing splash against his knees. The salt air smelled sharp and clean, and the rhythmic sound of the crashing surf filled his ears.
Once they were out past the break, the water felt calmer. They sat on their boards, bobbing gently with the swell of the sea. Maya pointed toward the horizon. "See that one? That’s your wave. It’s got good momentum but isn’t too steep. Get into position!" Leo flipped onto his stomach and began to paddle with all his might. He felt the water lift the back of his board, a sudden surge of power pushing him forward.
"Pop up now!" Maya shouted over the roar of the water.
Leo didn't think; he just reacted. He pushed his chest up, swung his feet under him, and found his equilibrium. For a few glorious seconds, he was flying across the face of the water. The wind whipped past his face, and the world seemed to blur into a streak of blue and white foam. He didn't stay up forever—eventually, the wave tapered off and he tumbled into the water with a splash—but as he surfaced, he was wearing the biggest grin of his life. He couldn't wait to paddle back out and do it all over again.
