The sun was very bright in the sky. The green grass felt warm on Sam’s feet.
Sam sat on his front porch. He wiped his head. He was very hot.
Suddenly, he heard a song. It was a happy and tinkling tune.
Sam jumped up fast. "The ice cream truck is here!" he cried out loud.
He ran into the kitchen. His mom was busy there.
"Can I please have a cold treat?" Sam asked with a smile.
Mom smiled back at him. She gave him two shiny silver coins.
Sam held them tight. He ran back outside to the sidewalk.
His friend Lily was waiting there too. She had a coin in her small hand.
"I hear the music coming closer," Lily said. She looked happy.
The music grew louder and louder. A big truck turned the corner.
It was painted bright blue and white. It had many pictures of treats on the side.
There were popsicles of every color. There were cones with nuts on top.
The truck slowed down and came to a stop. The driver waved at the kids.
He had a big, kind smile on his face. "Hello there!" the man said.
Sam looked at all the pretty pictures. He saw a bright red popsicle.
"I would like that red one, please," Sam said. He felt excited.
Lily chose a brown fudge bar. It looked very sweet and creamy.
They gave their silver coins to the man. The man was very fast.
He handed them their ice cream. It felt very cold in their hands.
"Thank you very much!" Sam and Lily said together.
They walked over to a big oak tree. They sat down in the cool, dark shade.
The red popsicle tasted like sweet fruit. It was very cold on Sam's tongue.
The cold treat made Sam feel much better. He was not hot at all now.
The ice cream truck started its engine. It began to drive down the road.
The music faded away into the distance. It was a very good summer day.
Sam and Lily finished every bite of their treats. They were happy friends.
