The sun hung like a heavy gold coin in the shimmering blue sky, making it the perfect Saturday for an adventure. Leo and his younger sister, Mia, had been planning this day all week. They dragged a sturdy wooden crate to the edge of their driveway and draped it with a bright, checkered tablecloth. Today was the grand opening of their very own lemonade stand.
"We need to make sure it’s the coldest drink in the neighborhood," Leo said, dumping a heavy bag of ice into a large glass pitcher. Mia carefully squeezed the last few lemons, her hands sticky with juice. They added just the right amount of sugar and a few sprigs of fresh mint from their mother's garden to give it a special "secret ingredient" flair.
For the first thirty minutes, the street was quiet. A single squirrel scampered across the pavement, but it didn't seem interested in a refreshing beverage. Leo sighed, leaning his chin on his hand. "Maybe nobody is thirsty today," he muttered. But Mia wasn't ready to give up. She grabbed a pack of neon markers and a large piece of cardboard. In bold, bubbly letters, she wrote: LUCKY LEMONADE – COOL DOWN HERE!
Just as she propped the sign against the crate, Mr. Henderson, their neighbor from two doors down, walked by with his golden retriever, Barnaby. "That looks like just what I need," Mr. Henderson said, wiping his brow. He took a long sip and his eyes widened. "The mint is a fantastic touch! Best twenty-five cents I’ve spent all year."
As if Mr. Henderson’s praise were a signal, more people began to appear. Mrs. Gable stopped her bicycle, and a group of kids from the soccer team marched over after their practice. The clinking of ice and the sound of laughter filled the air. By the time the sun began to dip behind the trees, the pitcher was empty, and the "lemon fund" jar was heavy with coins. Leo and Mia shared a high-five, already brainstorming how to make their stand even bigger next weekend.
