A Day for Children's Books in Brazil

A table of colorful books stands near the entrance of a Brazilian library. Visitors can browse the covers and choose a story to share. A display like this could welcome readers on Brazil’s National Children’s Book Day, celebrated each year on April 18.
The observance is called Dia Nacional do Livro Infantil. Brazil established the date by law in 2002. April 18 is also the birthday of Monteiro Lobato, a Brazilian author born in 1882 who wrote books for children. The day offers a chance to recognize children’s literature and the people who create it.
A school or library might celebrate by holding a read-aloud. One reader could share a story while listeners notice how the characters speak or what happens next. Hearing the words can make a story enjoyable for a group, including children who are still learning to read on their own.
Illustrations can give readers another way into a book. During a celebration, children could look closely at a picture and share details they notice. A drawing might show a character’s worried expression or a setting that the words do not describe in detail. Readers can then talk about how the picture and the words work together.
