A Forest Path for Red Pandas

High in a mountain forest, a red panda grips a branch with sharp claws. Its reddish fur blends with the moss and leaves, while its long, ringed tail helps it balance. Below the trees grows bamboo, the plant that makes up most of its diet. This forest provides more than a place to eat. It gives the red panda shelter, paths for travel, and places to raise young.
Red pandas live in cool mountain forests in parts of Nepal, India, Bhutan, China, and Myanmar. They are skilled climbers and often rest in trees during the day. Although their name includes the word panda, they are not closely related to giant pandas. Red pandas belong to their own animal family.
When forests become separated
A red panda needs enough healthy forest to find food and shelter. But forests can be cleared or changed as people build roads, collect wood, and use land for farming. A large forest may be broken into smaller patches, a problem called fragmentation.
