The fellowship hall was buzzing with excitement for the annual talent night. Naomi stood on the stage, practicing her scales. Her voice was clear and bright, like a bell ringing through the room. Marcus watched her from the back, holding a stack of heavy folding chairs. He wished more than anything that he could stand up there and make everyone smile with a beautiful song. Instead, his job was to make sure there was a place for everyone to sit.
As the sun began to set, the room filled with families. Marcus worked quickly. He lined up the rows perfectly, ensuring there was enough space for people to walk through the aisles. He helped Mrs. Gable find a seat near the front because she had trouble hearing. He even ran to the kitchen to grab extra napkins when someone spilled their juice. He was so busy that he almost forgot to feel sad about not being on stage.
Finally, it was Naomi’s turn. When she sang, the whole room went silent. Her voice was truly a gift, and Marcus clapped louder than anyone when she finished. After the show, while everyone was eating cookies and talking, Marcus started folding the chairs back up. He did not want the janitor to have to stay late to clean up the mess.
"Marcus, hold on a second," a voice called out. It was Mr. Henderson, the church leader.
Marcus stopped and wiped a bit of dust off his jeans. "Is something wrong, Mr. Henderson?" he asked.
"Quite the opposite," Mr. Henderson said with a warm smile. "I have been watching you all evening. While everyone else was focused on the stage, you were focused on the people. You made sure everyone was comfortable and cared for. You have a real gift for service, Marcus."
Marcus looked at the rows of chairs he had worked so hard on. He realized that while God gave Naomi a voice to lead the singing, He had given Marcus a heart to help others. He realized that every talent matters when it is used to show kindness to those around him.
