A Walk by the Harbor

Dear Diary,
Today Dad and I walk by Newport Harbor in Rhode Island. The air smells salty, and the wind tugs at my hat. I hold it down with one hand as we follow the path beside the water.
Boats bob on the water. Some have tall masts. A mast is a tall pole that holds a sail. I look up at the masts and wonder how the sailors reach the top.
I spot a small red boat near a dock. Its rope is tied to a post. The boat rocks back and forth, but the rope keeps it close. I watch the rope pull tight and then go loose again.
“Can we find a blue boat too?” I ask Dad.
“Let's look,” he says.
We walk along the harbor and look past a row of white boats. A gull calls from a post. I see a green boat and a yellow boat, but no blue one. For a moment, I think I see one behind a bigger boat. It is only a blue cover.
Dad and I keep walking. I look between the boats and across the water. The wind blows my hair into my eyes, and I push it away.
