Coupled with canal dredging, sea-level rise, and natural subsidence—the gradual sinking of marsh soil under its own weight—southeastern Louisiana has experienced rapid coastal land loss.
Today, coastal scientists and environmental engineers are working on large-scale restoration projects to slow this erosion. Innovative efforts, such as controlled sediment diversions, cut openings into existing levees to redirect river water and silt back into starving wetlands. By using modern engineering to mimic the natural delta-building processes of the past, researchers hope to stabilize and rebuild southeastern Louisiana's vulnerable coastline.
