Augustus Saint-Gaudens was one of the most acclaimed sculptors in American history, a master artist whose work captured the spirit of a transforming nation during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1848 to an Irish mother and a French shoemaker father, Saint-Gaudens immigrated with his family to New York City when he was just an infant. As a teenager, he showed exceptional talent for art and began an apprenticeship as a cameo cutter while taking night classes at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design. Seeking to refine his craft, he traveled to Europe in 1867 to study at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later lived in Rome. These European experiences provided him with a strong foundation in classical sculpture, which he would soon combine with a uniquely American sensibility.
