Beatrix Potter was born in London, England, in 1866. As a young girl, she loved nature and living things. She and her brother kept many real pets in their home, including frogs, mice, and even a pet rabbit named Peter. Beatrix watched how the animals moved, ate, and slept. She sat quietly with a sketchbook and drew careful pictures of each one.

As she grew up, Beatrix turned her drawings into illustrated stories. In her imagination, she dressed the animals in tiny blue jackets and small shoes. Her most famous fictional tale was about Peter Rabbit, a mischievous bunny who squeezed into a vegetable garden. Children loved reading about Peter, but Beatrix made sure people knew the difference between real animals and pretend ones. Real rabbits do not wear clothes or talk, but her real rabbit inspired the make-believe character.

Beatrix used the money she earned from her books to buy a farm in the English countryside, called the Lake District. She loved the green hills, clear lakes, and open fields. She learned how to raise a special kind of local sheep called Herdwick sheep and became a skilled farmer.
