Beneath the Desert: Exploring Carlsbad Caverns
Deep beneath the Chihuahuan Desert in southeastern New Mexico lies a hidden wonder. Carlsbad Caverns National Park is home to more than 110 known limestone caves. While the desert above features rugged cacti, dry canyons, and rocky hills, the world below ground reveals a massive network of decorated stone chambers sculpted by nature over millions of years.
The story of Carlsbad Caverns began around 250 million years ago when an ancient inland sea covered the area. A massive reef formed from the remains of sea plants and shell-bearing animals. Over time, the sea evaporated, and layers of sediment buried the limestone reef deep underground. Millions of years later, acidic groundwater slowly seeped into cracks in the limestone. Unlike most caves formed by running rainwater, Carlsbad Caverns was etched out by powerful sulfuric acid, which dissolved the rock and carved out huge underground spaces. Eventually, the water drained away, leaving behind enormous empty chambers filled with air.
