Between the Boxes

Saturday, October 14
My sneakers are still gray with basement dust, and my fingertips smell like old paper. If anyone had told me this morning that volunteering at the annual community center book sale would turn into a race against the clock, I would have laughed. I thought I would just sit on a folding stool with a roll of yellow price stickers and listen to music through one earbud.
Instead, Mr. Henderson, our volunteer coordinator, gave me a very specific mission at noon. "Maya," he said, tapping a red clipboard, "these three banker boxes contain donated regional field guides and astronomy manuals. They need to be unpacked, sorted by subject, and stickered before the two-thirty rush. The regional naturalists always arrive early, and if the tables aren't organized, it becomes chaos."
I promised him I would handle it. I wanted to prove that seventh graders could handle real responsibility without constant supervision, so I cleared table four and started sorting. By one-fifteen, I had a rhythmic system going: bird identification guides on the left, local geology in the middle, stargazing atlases on the right.
