Beyond the Captain's Armband

October 14
I really thought today was going to be the day. For the past three weeks, ever since Coach Evans announced that our middle school soccer team would be selecting a team captain, I had mentally rehearsed hearing my name called. I pictured running out to the midfield circle for the coin toss, wearing the yellow elastic band around my upper arm. I know every drill by heart, I haven't missed a single practice, and I spent the entire summer running laps around Miller Park until my sneakers wore thin.
So when Coach blew his whistle at the end of practice today and gathered everyone near the equipment shed, my stomach turned into a knot of nervous excitement. The grass smelled like damp autumn earth, and everyone was wiping sweat from their foreheads, leaning in close. Coach looked around the circle, held up the captain's armband, and said, "Leadership takes a lot of different forms, but this season, we need someone who can steady our defense and keep everyone talking on the pitch. Our captain for this year is Mateo."
