Rising dramatically from the floor of the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the most recognizable cities in the world. The history of Las Vegas begins long before the arrival of modern resorts. For thousands of years, the Southern Paiute people inhabited the arid valley, relying on their deep knowledge of the desert environment to survive. In 1829, a Spanish trader named Rafael Rivera became the first European recorded to set foot in the region. He named the area "Las Vegas," which translates to "The Meadows" in Spanish. This name was inspired by the lush green grass fed by natural underground artesian springs. These springs provided a vital water source for travelers traveling along the Old Spanish Trail, making the valley an essential stopping point in an otherwise unforgiving landscape.

The trajectory of Las Vegas shifted dramatically in the twentieth century. Incorporated as a city in 1905 after the establishment of a major railroad line connecting San Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, the town initially served as a modest transportation hub. However, two major events in 1931 fundamentally reshaped its future: Nevada legalized casino gambling, and construction began on the massive Hoover Dam just thirty miles to the southeast. Thousands of workers flooded into the area to build the dam, boosting the local economy during the height of the Great Depression. The completion of Hoover Dam provided Las Vegas with an abundant supply of hydroelectric power and created Lake Mead, securing the water resource necessary for rapid urban expansion.

Following World War II, visionary developers recognized the potential of Las Vegas as a resort destination. The iconic stretch of road known as the "Las Vegas Strip"—technically located outside city limits in Paradise, Nevada—began to take shape with opulent, themed hotels. Over the following decades, the city evolved from a regional gambling town into an international epicenter for tourism, major conventions, and professional sports.

Today, Las Vegas faces unique challenges associated with operating a major city in an arid environment. As climate change and population growth place increasing demands on the Colorado River, Las Vegas has become a global leader in water conservation. Through sophisticated water recycling systems and strict turf prohibition policies, the city recycles nearly 100 percent of its indoor water.
