Charlemagne: The Father of Europe

Charlemagne, whose name means "Charles the Great," was a powerful ruler who lived over 1200 years ago. He is known as the "Father of Europe" because he united many different kingdoms into one big empire. This empire covered much of Western Europe, including parts of what is now France, Germany, and Italy.

A Powerful King

Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768 AD. The Franks were a group of people who lived in the area that is now France. He was a strong and brave leader. He spent much of his time leading his army into battle. He wanted to make his kingdom bigger and more powerful. He fought against many enemies, including the Saxons, the Lombards, and the Avars.

Uniting Europe

One of Charlemagne's biggest achievements was uniting much of Western Europe under his rule. He conquered many different lands and brought them together into one empire. This empire was called the Carolingian Empire. It was a time of great change and growth in Europe.
