Cheyenne Bottoms: A Big Home for Birds
Cheyenne Bottoms is a very special place in central Kansas. It is a big wetland. A wetland is a land with lots of water and mud. Tall grass grows in the soft dirt.
Many animals like to live here. It is a great home for nature.
Many birds fly through the sky every year. They fly north in the spring. They fly south in the fall. This long trip is called migration.
The birds get tired on their long trip. They need a good place to rest. Cheyenne Bottoms is the perfect spot for them.
The birds stop at the marsh to eat and drink. They find bugs, seeds, and small fish in the water. Ducks swim in the deep pools.
Long-legged birds walk in the shallow mud. They rest their wings before they fly again.
Other animals live at Cheyenne Bottoms all year. Turtles sit on warm logs in the sun. Frogs leap through the wet grass.
Fish swim under the water. Deer walk near the edge of the marsh. All of these animals need the clean water to live.
Cheyenne Bottoms helps many animals stay safe. It gives them food, water, and shelter. People work hard to protect this special marsh.
We want it to stay a safe home for birds and wildlife for a long time.
