Chimpanzee Tool Time: Clever Chimps and Their Tools

Rock Stars: Cracking Nuts

One of the most well-known tool-using behaviors of chimpanzees is cracking nuts. In many parts of Africa, chimps feast on hard-shelled nuts, but getting to the tasty inside is no easy task. That's where rocks come in. Chimpanzees carefully select stones of different sizes and weights. They use larger stones as anvils, placing the nut on top. Then, they use smaller, hammer-like stones to smash the nut open. This requires a lot of skill. The chimps must hit the nut with just the right amount of force to crack it without crushing the kernel inside. Young chimps learn this skill by watching their mothers and practicing for years.

Termite Fishing: A Sticky Situation

Another fascinating tool-using behavior is termite fishing. Termites are a nutritious snack for chimps, but they live inside hard-to-reach nests. To get to them, chimps use sticks or modified stems. They carefully insert the stick into a termite hole and wiggle it around. The termites, thinking the stick is an intruder, grab onto it with their mandibles (jaws). The chimp then pulls the stick out, covered in tasty termites, and licks them off. Different chimpanzee groups have different techniques for termite fishing. Some groups use longer sticks, while others use shorter ones. Some groups even chew the end of the stick to make it frayed, which helps attract more termites. These variations demonstrate how chimpanzees can develop their own unique cultures of tool use.

Leaf Sponges: Staying Hydrated

Chimpanzees also use leaves as tools. One clever trick is making leaf sponges. Chimps will chew on a handful of leaves until they become soft and absorbent. They then dip the leaf sponge into water sources, such as tree holes or puddles, and squeeze the water into their mouths. This is a convenient way to drink water, especially when clean water is scarce. Leaf sponges show us that chimps are resourceful problem-solvers who can adapt to their environment.
