In 1871, a man named General William Jackson Palmer had a brilliant idea. He wanted to create a beautiful, well-planned city in the shadow of Pikes Peak, one of Colorado's most famous mountains. He imagined a place where people could enjoy the stunning scenery and breathe fresh mountain air. And so, Colorado Springs was born!
Pikes Peak: The Mountain That Inspires
Pikes Peak isn't just any mountain. It's a "fourteener," which means it's over 14,000 feet tall! This majestic mountain has inspired people for centuries. Native American tribes, like the Ute, knew and respected this land long before Colorado Springs existed. The mountain is made up of granite, which is a very hard, strong rock, the mountain watches over the city.
How Pikes Peak Got Its Name
Zebulon Pike was an explorer who tried to climb the mountain in 1806. He didn't make it to the top, but the mountain was named after him anyway! It became a symbol of adventure and the American West.
