Crafting Vibrant Papel Picado Banners

Papel picado, which means "chiseled paper" in Spanish, is a traditional Mexican decorative folk art. Artisans often stack dozens of sheets of delicate tissue paper and carve elaborate pictures using hammers and tiny chisels. You can make your own eye-catching version of these fluttering banners for a classroom celebration or home holiday using simple folds and household scissors.
Materials Needed
- Several sheets of brightly colored tissue paper (cut into 8-by-10-inch rectangles)
- Child-safe crafting scissors
- A long piece of yarn, string, or thin twine (about six to eight feet)
- A glue stick or clear tape
- A pencil (optional, for planning shapes)
- A flat, clean work surface
Step 1: Prepare the Top Border
Place one tissue paper rectangle flat on your table in a horizontal position. Fold down the top edge by about one inch to create a straight flap across the entire width. This top flap will remain uncut because it serves as the sturdy anchor where your string will eventually attach. Press the crease firmly with your fingernail.
