Denver: The Mile High City

Denver, Colorado, often called the "Mile High City," has a rich and fascinating history. From its humble beginnings as a gold mining camp to its current status as a major metropolitan area, Denver's story is one of growth, innovation, and resilience.

The Gold Rush Era

It all started in 1858 when gold was discovered near the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. This discovery sparked the Colorado Gold Rush, attracting thousands of prospectors hoping to strike it rich. Two towns, Auraria and St. Charles, sprang up near the gold strike. General William Larimer, Jr., jumped the claim to St. Charles, named the new town Denver City in honor of James W. Denver, the governor of the Kansas Territory (of which the area was then a part). Larimer hoped to gain favor with the governor and make Denver the capital of the new territory.

The early days were tough. The gold was harder to find than expected, and many miners left. However, Denver persisted, becoming a supply hub for the surrounding mining camps.

From Camp to City

Denver's location was crucial. It served as a gateway to the Rocky Mountains and a central point for transportation. In 1867, Denver became the capital of the Colorado Territory, solidifying its importance.
