Engineers spend a lot of time making track spikes as light as possible. Every extra gram of weight on a shoe makes the runner's leg muscles work harder to lift their feet. Modern spikes are often made of thin, breathable materials that feel like a second skin. Even the placement of the spikes is carefully planned. Sprinters usually have spikes only on the front part of the shoe because they run on their toes. Distance runners, who run longer races like the mile, have spikes that are more flexible and have a little bit of cushioning in the heel to protect their feet.
